Peaky Blinders is the best show you’re not watching on Netflix. I say that because I like to think I am up to date on most things and until a few weeks ago, I had never crossed paths with Cillian Murphy and his Irish gangster family. Launched in 2013 on the BBC Network, Peaky Blinders has already dropped two full seasons on Netflix with season three arriving soon.
This gangster family epic takes place in 1919 Birmingham, England, shortly after the conclusion of World War 1. The family is centered around Thomas Shelby (Cillian Murphy), as head of the Peaky Blinders, a gang well-known for sewing razor blades into the brim of their caps to be used as weapons. Tommy and his brothers, Arthur (Paul Anderson) and John (Joe Cole) are Irish war hero’s and survivors looking to turn their illegal gambling ring into a legitimate kingdom. During season two, Alfie Solomons (Tom Hardy) was introduced into the mix as a Jewish booze smuggler and import/export thug man of sorts. Cillian and Tom previously worked together on The Dark Knight and once again their performances are on point.
Every group of bad boys needs an arch enemy, and that is where Inspector Chester Campbell (Sam Neil) comes into play. The charismatic clash between Thomas and Chester is electric every time they meet. Fighting, forming alliances, sharing a love loss and more. Trying my best to not provide any spoilers here. The set is period correct and the acting is top notch. If you love gangster films, I promise you are going to binge watch Peaky Blinders. Grab the popcorn and set aside a good portion of your weekend.
