I know at least one person that is very excited to hear about the return of Acura’s legendary NSX. The reason I use the term “legendary”, is because it is just that. A vehicle that when it was first available (1991), introduced a mostly affordable supercar to the masses. In a time when the Tuner/Import world was building Civic’s, Legend’s and Accord’s, along comes the NSX, blowing them all away. I know because I was one of those guys building Civic’s in the early 90’s attending Hot Import Nights shows on the weekends. The NSX held a number of first’s; the first aluminum bodied car, the first with four-channel ABS, the first to use titanium con-rods and if I remember correctly, the first to offer electronic power steering.
As of today, we have seen mostly rumors about the new car from Acura. A few videos have been trolling around the internet and some spy photos have been revealed on various auto blogs. From what I can tell we are looking at an aluminum body, hybrid powered vehicle that employs a mid-mounted V6 with a wet twin-clutch, seven-speed transmission and a hybridized electronic motor driving the rear wheels. Acura’s website mentions two more electric motors spinning the front wheels, providing torque under heavy acceleration and braking to control the NSX better through corners.
Does anyone else think it looks like an Audi R8 got smashed together with a Lamborghini Gallardo?
Early numbers tell us the 2015 or maybe 2016 Acura NSX will run you in the ballpark of $130,000. Ouch. That’s a far cry from the original price in 1991 of $60,000. Will it be worth it? Only time will tell. Visit Acura.
