Heading out to the desert with our friends has always been one of our favorite adventures. The moments we have shared around campfires, traversing trails and even wrenching in the middle of nowhere, will never be forgotten. We may all be legends in our own minds, but here is your chance to ride with the true Legends of Motorsports. Off-Road Motorsports Hall of Fame has teamed up with Made Media, OMG and Racing for Life to launch the First Annual Off-Road Legends Rally. Ride alongside names like Walker Evans, Rod Hall and Larry Roeseler.
This ‘Bring Your Own Vehicle’ event, gets you on the trail with the guys that have achieved greatness in the sport of Desert Racing and more. “Our mission is to preserve, celebrate and share the culture of off-roading. The Legends Rally event format let’s us do just that. Come out and have a great time while raising funds for a good cause,” stated Rod Hall, Founder of ORMHOF.
The Team has setup three beautiful desert and mountain loops for the inaugural event. “I spent a large portion of my life off-road in these destinations. They provide endless scenery, fun and challenging terrain with a great mixture of trail profiles. Riders will love it.” Jordan May, Editor of A Gentleman’s Word.
The Thomas Mountain Loop is 45 miles long with a total elevation change of 5,000 feet. Estimated ride time is 3-4 hours. Leaving the Buttes and Saddles Ranch, Rod Hall will lead this trek as it passes through beautiful downtown Anza, then heads north on Howard Road, about a mile from the Cahuilla Casino. Heading up the side of Thomas Mountain, there is a rendezvous point at the top of 6,000 ft. Thomas Mountain sporting spectacular 100 mile views of Southern California, from the Salton Sea to Mt. Baldy. As the Thomas Mountain Rally loop winds east to Garner Valley, you will be treated to a view of Lake Hemet, passing through forested camping grounds. You will be provided a tasty box lunch and drinks.
Looking for a little bit more action? The Idyllwild Loop covers 110 miles with an optional 15 mile bonus Allesandro Single Track Challenge. With 100+ miles and an elevation change of 19,000 feet, this is definitely an advanced ride. Also leaving the Buttes and Saddles Ranch, this trek will follow along the same starting route as the Thomas Mountain Loop. At the top of the Ridge, the Loop will head west, back down to Highway 74 just above Hemet. From there, it will head up Highway 74 about one mile, then turn left into Bee Canyon. Bee Canyon is the starting point of the USFS Green Sticker Riding Area. You will head up the side of Mt. San Jacinto, reaching an elevation of 6,100 feet at Pine Cove, then jaunt down Highway 243 to Idyllwild where you will be treated to lunch and music at Joan’s in the middle of town.
The Upper Anza Borrego & Bailey Cabin Loop is what I would call the Explorers Loop. Bailey’s Cabin is a rock edifice that has rusty bunks and is in a generally dilapidated condition. Yet it is a major monument in the Upper Anza Borrego Desert, the destination of this third loop. Should you leave before lunch, you will be provided a box lunch and drinks for the trail. Join the Legends as they lead you down Coyote Canyon, home of the endangered Big Horn Sheep. If you spot one, consider yourself lucky! You will drop more than 1,700 feet to the desert floor. For the motorcycles, make sure you are jetted right, otherwise you might run lean! Explore a few of the side canyons. There are a few artesian well oases along the canyon to look out for. This group will cover 25 miles in 2-4 hours.
About the Fundraising
Yes, this is the first ever non-induction ceremony fundraiser for ORMHOF. We are raising money to start building a virtual museum where we will not only be immortalizing the hall of famers, but creating a unique and special internet destination that will be a focal point of industry announcements, race event calendars and information about legislative issues facing our industry. ORMHOF has come a long way in the past ten years through the careful leadership of Chairman Rod Hall. Rod, along with his Board of Directors has resolved to expand and improve ORMHOF to help raise exposure for the sport.
